When you start to build a report in Power BI Desktop you are given a single, empty page to work with. Before you start building your report, though, you may want to configure the properties of the page that govern its size and shape, and how it expands and contracts to fill different sized screens. There is also the option of creating a separate layout of your report for viewing on a phone.

Building reports in Power BI Desktop is a matter of dragging visualisations onto a page, and then linking the visualisations up to data from the Power BI data model and setting other properties to control how that data is displayed. The data displayed on a page can be filtered either using the off-screen filtering functionality, using special Slicer visualisations, or by clicking on data within a regular visualisation. You can control how clicking on a slicer or a regular visualisation affects other visualisations on the same page by using the Edit Interactions button on the ribbon. Some visualisations, such as matrixes, also support drilling up and drilling down to display different levels of detail. Matrixes and tables also allow you to display images within them by using columns from your data model that have the Image URL data category set. As well as the built-in visualisations you can download custom visualisations built by third parties from store.office.com or from within Power BI Desktop. Similarly you can use code written in the R language to create more specialised visualisations. There are also a variety of visualisations that allow you to plot data on a map.

Once you have created a dashboard in the Power BI service by pinning visualisations as tiles, you have a certain amount of control over the layout of these tiles and how they behave. You can also set up alerts on dashboard tiles that contain single values, such as tile created from card visualisations.
